The Incident Management System (IMS), originally known as the Incident Command System, is an organisational structure system for managing people that solves the problem of management becoming overwhelmed and of communications challenges. These can easily occur during an incident or planned event when different organisations have to work together.
The system uses an internationally recognised set of core features to ensure a standardised approach.
Importantly, IMS does not replace the existing management system that you will already be using within your normal workplace or organisation. What the Incident Management System does do is ensure that people from different organisations with different systems, once trained in IMS, can work together seamlessly, effectively, and safely.
The Incident Management System can be thought of as a one plug fits all approach.
- Establishes a standardised approach to the management of people that prioritises their safety when working within the system.
- Uses a standardised approach to the elements of command, control, coordination, and communication.
- Uses clearly defined objectives and a documented process to ensure safety and accountability.
- Is recommended by the United Nations as an internationally accepted system for the management of people during incidents or planned events.
